Dear Toquam Families,
The start of the 2012-2013 school year is upon us and we are thrilled to welcome over 650 students into our school this year. This school year promises to bring the excitement of special events and fundraisers, such as our Annual Jog-A-Thon and Wellness Day, extraordinary field trips to places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the joy of scholars working and learning together, and the promise of many new activities as well!
Serving our school community over the past few years has given me the opportunity and distinct pleasure to build relationships with our families, strengthen our ties to the community, and watch our students grow. Central to our mission at Toquam are programs that engage our families in their child’s school experience and build a strong sense of community for the entire school community.
Across our country, educators have begun integrating a new set of literacy and mathematics standards into their instruction. Theses standards, called the Common Core State Standards, are currently for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and are focused on preparing all students for college and career readiness. A key component of these standards is the ability for educators to teach in such a way that allows students the opportunity to learn concepts at greater depth and mastery.
The Common Core State Standards build on work that has already begun at Toquam, as well as throughout the Stamford Public School System, therefore placing our staff and students in an advantageous position. Ensuring that our students are prepared for whatever lies ahead throughout their lives is fundamental to our beliefs and their success. We take pride in our focus on high standards and remain committed to ensuring all children’s strengths are built upon and the unique needs of all students are being met.
Whether you are new to the Toquam Family or have been a part of it for years, we want to invite you into our school. Attend your child’s programs, become an active member of the PTO, or volunteer in a classroom. You are invited to be a part of the high-quality learning and many wonderful activities that take place throughout the year. Stay current on all Toquam happenings by frequently visiting our website frequently and following me on Twitter @TQMPrincipal.
We look forward to a wonderful year of bustling hallways and students hard at work in their classrooms!
